Thesis title: “Study of the Practical Method for Settlement Analysis of Pile Groups.”

Abstract of Thesis:

Various numerical methods are now available for analysis of pile groups. Generally these methods use a computer program to perform the analysis of pile groups In this study, a practical method for calculating settlement of symmetric pile groups based on the variational solutions developed by Shen et al. (1997, 1999) are presented. This enables a quick estimate of the settlement of pile groups. The result obtained using the present method yield good agreement with the rigorous solutions achieved by variational approach (Shen et al. 1997, 1999). Case studies are also carried out to practical pile group problems. From a practical point of view, simple method that allow rapid estimation of the settlement of pile groups without recourse to computer programs are useful to engineering practice, especially in the early stages of design.  This practical method (Shen et al. 2000) fulfills these criteria. Using the practical method it is not needed any sort of advanced computer program. Simple computer programs are sufficient for obtaining the solutions. In the present study solution based on the practical method developed using the object oriented programming ‘Java’. Using these programs all the necessary soil parameters required for the solution of practical method can be easily calculated based on the field soil data. The pile settlement ratios for different soil parameters have analyzed with appropriate numerical as well as graphical analysis. The result evaluated using the variation solutions have also compared with the results of approximate formula in graphical mode. The solutions obtained by the practical method have reasonable conformity with the other conventional methods.
